Buying a charging station: what should you pay attention to? Buying guide 2026

Laadpaal kopen voor thuis - elektrische auto opladen bij woning

Bar2Charge |

Do you want a buy a charging station for home use, but not sure exactly which model suits your electric car and home? Then looking only at the maximum charging capacity isn't enough. The right charging station must match your car's AC charging speed, your fuse box, the number of phases, your daily mileage, and the functions you actually want to use.

In this charging station buying guide 2026 We explain step by step what you need to look out for. This way, you avoid paying for power your car cannot use or missing features later on that are particularly important for your situation.

1. Start with your electric car

The first question is not which charging station has the highest power output, but how much AC power your car can draw. After all, the onboard charger in the car determines the maximum AC charging speed.

A car that supports a maximum of 11 kW AC will not automatically charge at 22 kW at a 22 kW charging station. Therefore, vehicle compatibility is the best starting point.

With the Bar2Charge Car Selection Guide you can search for suitable charging solutions by car make and model. Additionally, read our guide. Which charging station suits my electric car?

2. What load capacity do you need?

When charging at home, you mainly encounter charging stations from 7.4 kW, 11 kW and 22 kW against. What power is sensible depends on both the car and the electrical connection.

Load capacity Typical connection When is it interesting?
7.4 kW 1-phase 32 A Cars with 1-phase AC charging or situations where 1-phase is suitable
11 kW 3-phase 16 A Many modern EVs and daily home charging
22 kW 3-phase 32 A If both the car and the installation support 22 kW AC

So, more power is not automatically better. Read our comparison. 11 kW or 22 kW charging station: which one do you need?

3. 1-phase or 3-phase charging station?

Before purchasing, check which grid connection and fuse box your home has. An 11 kW charging station normally uses 3-phase 16 A. For 22 kW, 3-phase 32 A is normally required. Whether this is available and advisable at home must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

If you do not yet have a suitable connection, modifications to the meter cabinet or grid connection may be necessary. Therefore, have the installation and protection assessed by an expert.

4. How fast do you want to be able to charge at home?

For most drivers, a car does not need to be fully charged at home in one or two hours. A car is often parked for several hours in the evening and at night. As a result, 11 kW can be more than sufficient in many situations.

The required speed depends primarily on the battery capacity, daily energy consumption, and available charging time. Those who drive relatively few kilometers daily do not automatically need to buy the most powerful charging station.

5. Load balancing: do you need it?

Dynamic load balancing can adjust the car's charging capacity to the other power consumption in the house. This is interesting when, for example, cooking, the heat pump, the boiler, and EV charging simultaneously demand a lot of power.

The system helps distribute the available capacity more intelligently. Whether load balancing is built-in, optional, or available via additional hardware varies per charging station.

Read the detailed explanation in What is load balancing at a charging station?

6. Fixed charging cable or socket?

A charging station can a fixed Type 2 charging cable have or a Type 2 socket in which you connect a separate cable.

Charging station with fixed cable

A fixed cable is especially convenient. You park, grab the cable, and plug it into the car. You don't have to take a separate charging cable out of the car every time.

Charging station with socket

A socket offers more flexibility. You can use the desired cable length yourself and replace the cable without having to replace the fixed charging cable of the charging station.

Do you need a spare cable? Check out our Type 2 charging cables.

7. Which cable length should you choose?

Do not just measure the straight distance between the charging station and the charging port. Take into account the parking position, the location of the charging port on the car, and sufficient clearance around the car.

A cable that is too short becomes annoying every day. An extremely long cable, on the other hand, is not always necessary. Therefore, choose a length that comfortably fits your parking space.

8. App, RFID and Plug & Start

Modern charging stations can have various control options. For example:

  • App: manage settings and charging sessions, depending on model;
  • RFID: authorize loading with a card or tag;
  • Plug & Start: connect and start charging immediately;
  • Timer or scheduler: set a desired charging time.

Determine in advance what you actually need. For a private driveway, simple operation may suffice, while RFID and extensive registration can become more important for shared or business use.

9. MID meter: when is it important?

A MID-certified energy meter can be relevant when charged energy needs to be reliably recorded for, for example, business billing. Not every private user needs this.

If you use a company car or want to administratively settle charging costs, check in advance which requirements apply to your situation and whether the charging station supports the necessary metering and recording functions.

10. Charging with solar panels

If you have solar panels, smart charging can be interesting. Some charging solutions, in combination with additional energy metering or an energy system, can adjust charging behavior to available solar power.

Please note: 'solar ready' does not mean the same thing for every brand or model. Therefore, check which additional hardware, energy meter, or integration is required.

11. Safety and security

A charging station is an electrical device that can handle high power levels for extended periods. Therefore, do not look solely at the design and app features. Also check the product specifications, protection rating, required earth leakage and DC protection, and the manufacturer's installation instructions.

The ultimate safety depends on both the charging station and the entire electrical installation. Have the cabling, circuit, protection, and connection correctly sized and installed.

12. Install outdoors: pay attention to IP protection

If the charging station is to be installed outdoors, check the specified IP rating and the installation instructions. The IP rating indicates the degree to which the housing offers protection against dust and water, among other things. The correct mounting position remains important in this regard.

13. Smart charging and dynamic energy tariffs

More and more users want to charge when electricity is cheaper or when a lot of their own solar energy is available. Check whether the charging station, app, or connected energy platform supports the desired form of smart charging. Not every charging station works with every energy platform.

14.How much does a home charging station cost?

The total price does not consist solely of the charging station. Also take into account installation, cable length between the meter cabinet and the charging point, any excavation work, modifications to the fuse box, and optional components for load balancing.

Therefore, it is better to compare the total solution than just the purchase price of the device.

15. Charging station or mobile home charger?

Not everyone needs a fixed charging station immediately. mobile home charger This can be interesting if you want flexibility or wish to charge at multiple suitable locations. A fixed charging station, on the other hand, offers great convenience when you charge at the same spot almost every day.

We have extensively compared both solutions in Mobile home charger or fixed charging station: which is better?. You might also want to check out our mobile home chargers.

16. Future-proof buying

You will likely use a charging station for longer than your current car. Therefore, also consider a future EV, a second electric car, solar panels, a home battery, or business offsetting. This does not mean you always have to buy a 22 kW unit, but it does mean that expandability and smart features can be factors to consider.

Checklist: buying a charging station in 2026

In any case, check before you order:

  • maximum AC charging capacity of your car;
  • 1-phase or 3-phase connection;

Which charging station should I buy?

For many modern electric cars and homes, a 11 kW 3-phase charging station A practical choice, but that is not a universal rule. Some cars charge AC at 7.4 kW, others support 22 kW, and the home connection can also be the limiting factor.

Therefore, we always advise checking the car and home situation first, and only then choosing a model.
