In recent times, we have been experiencing high temperatures in large parts of Europe. During hot days, a charger may reduce its charging capacity or temporarily switch off. In many cases, this is not a malfunction, but an important safety feature.
Built-in temperature protection
Many modern chargers are equipped with temperature protection that continuously monitors the temperature of the plug and the internal electronics.
When the temperature rises too high, the charger may:
- Automatically reduce the load capacity.
- Temporarily pause loading.
- Completely switch off charging until the temperature is safe again.
In this way, both the charger and the electrical installation are protected against overheating.
Why is this happening?
During warm weather, the temperature can rise more rapidly. This is amplified when:
- the charger is used for an extended period;
- the charger or plug hangs in direct sunlight;
- a socket or connection makes poor contact;
- the electrical installation is older.
Due to these factors, the temperature can exceed the safe limit, after which the safety system intervenes.
This is actually a good sign
When a charger switches itself off due to excessive temperature, it usually means that the built-in safety mechanism is working correctly. Without this protection, the temperature could rise further, resulting in damage to the charger, the socket, or even dangerous situations.
Tips for hot days
To reduce the risk of overheating, we advise:
- Charge in the shade if possible.
- Make sure the plug is properly connected.
- Do not use extension cords or cable reels.
- Check if the socket is in good condition.
- Temporarily reduce the charging current if necessary.
Safe charging, even in summer
High outdoor temperatures are not a problem as long as a charger is equipped with good temperature protection. This technology ensures that charging is automatically adjusted when necessary, so that you can safely and responsibly charge your electric car even during hot summer days.
