Which charging station do you need?
The right charging station depends on the maximum AC charging power of your electric car, the electrical connection in your home and how you want to charge. Many electric cars can charge at up to 11 kW AC. Some models support 22 kW, while plug-in hybrids often have a lower maximum AC charging power.
A higher-power charging station does not automatically charge the car faster. The car's onboard charger determines how much charging power is actually accepted. Always check the maximum AC charging power of your vehicle.
Type 2 and Type 1 electric cars
Type 2 is the most commonly used AC charging connector for electric cars in Europe. Do you have a vehicle with a Type 1 connection? A suitable charging solution is often still possible. Depending on the charging station and vehicle, a suitable Type 1 adapter can be used.
For specific applications, we can also supply charging stations with a Type 1 connection by special order. If you are unsure, contact us so that we can check which solution best suits your car.
Charging station with fixed cable or socket
A fixed-cable charging station has the charging cable permanently attached. This is especially practical when you always charge the same car at home: simply take the plug, connect it to the car and start charging.
A socket charging station does not have a fixed charging cable. You use a separate charging cable between the charging station and the car. This provides more flexibility in cable length and connection, and the cable can easily be replaced or taken with you when needed.
7.4 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW charging station
A 7.4 kW charging station generally operates on a single-phase 32-amp connection. An 11 kW charging station usually operates on a three-phase 16-amp connection. For the full 22 kW charging power, a three-phase 32-amp connection is generally required.
For many households and electric cars, 11 kW is a practical choice. A 22 kW charging station is especially useful when both the car and the electrical connection support this power. With adjustable charging stations, the maximum amperage can often be adapted to the available connection.
Charging station with app and RFID
Depending on the model, app control lets you view the charging status, monitor charging sessions and set a charging schedule. RFID can protect the charging station against unauthorized use so that only authorized users can start a charging session.
Some charging stations also support Plug & Start. Charging then starts automatically as soon as the charging cable is connected to the car.
The app you need varies by charging station. Many smart charging stations work with Smart Life or Tuya, for example. The product page states which app belongs to your charging station.
Charging station with load balancing
Load balancing automatically adjusts the charging power to the current electricity consumption in the home. This reduces the risk of overloading the electrical connection when several devices are using electricity at the same time.
Safe charging station installation
Always have a fixed charging station correctly connected by a qualified installer. The meter cabinet, cabling, available grid connection and required protective devices are checked, among other things. This ensures that the charging station is connected safely and appropriately for the required charging power.
Frequently asked questions about charging stations
What is the difference between an 11 kW and 22 kW charging station?
An 11 kW charging station typically operates on 3-phase 16 amps. A 22 kW charging station typically operates on 3-phase 32 amps. The actual charging speed also depends on the maximum AC charging power of the electric car.
I have a car with Type 1. Can I use these charging stations?
Yes, in many cases this is possible. Depending on the charging station and your car, a suitable Type 1 adapter can be used. We can also supply Type 1 charging stations on special order for specific applications. If in doubt, contact us for advice.
What is the difference between a charging station with a fixed cable and a socket charging station?
With a fixed-cable charging station, the charging cable is permanently attached to the station. A socket charging station only has a connection and is used with a separate charging cable. A socket model offers more flexibility in cable length and makes it easier to replace the cable separately.
Which charging cable do I need for a socket charging station?
This depends on your car's connector, the maximum AC charging power and the charging station. A Type 2 charging cable is used for many European electric cars. Also choose a cable that is suitable for the required number of phases, amperage and charging power.
Which charging station do I need for my electric car?
First check the maximum AC charging power and the type of charging connector on your car. Also take into account the available electrical connection in your home and decide whether you want a charging station with a fixed cable or a socket.
Do I need a single-phase or three-phase charging station?
A 7.4 kW charging station usually operates on a single-phase connection. For 11 kW or 22 kW, a three-phase connection is generally used. The right choice also depends on the maximum charging power supported by your car.
I have a 3x25A connection. Can I still buy a 22 kW 32A charging station?
Yes, you can. Most of our charging stations have adjustable amperage. With a 3x25A connection, the maximum charging power can be reduced to a suitable amperage. The charging station will then not charge at the full 32A. For higher charging powers, we recommend load balancing and correct installation.
I have a 1x16A connection. Can I still buy a 7.4 kW 32A charging station?
Yes, if the charging station has adjustable amperage. The charging current can be reduced to a suitable amperage. Keep in mind that with a 1x16A connection, the charging station cannot charge at the full 32A and therefore cannot charge at 7.4 kW.
I have a hybrid car. Can I charge it with a charging station?
Yes, absolutely. The maximum charging power is determined by your car's onboard charger. For example, if you use a 22 kW charging station but your hybrid car can charge at a maximum of 3.7 kW AC, the car will charge at a maximum of 3.7 kW.
What is load balancing?
Load balancing automatically adjusts the charging power to the current electricity consumption in the home. This reduces the risk of overloading the electrical connection.
What is the advantage of a charging station with an app?
Depending on the model, an app lets you view the charging status, monitor charging sessions and set delayed charging, for example. Available functions vary by charging station.
What is RFID used for?
RFID can be used to protect a charging station against unauthorized use. Only users with an authorized RFID card can start a charging session.
Can I charge my car in the rain with a charging station?
Yes. Charging stations and suitable charging plugs are designed for outdoor use and can normally also be used in the rain. Make sure the cable, plug and connections are undamaged and correctly connected, and always follow the IP rating and usage instructions of the relevant model.
Can I install a charging station myself?
We recommend having a fixed charging station correctly connected by a qualified installer. This ensures that the meter cabinet, cabling, protective devices and available grid connection are properly taken into account.
