Many EV drivers sooner or later find themselves in a situation where their standard charging cable is just a little too short. The solution seems simple: just attach an extension cord. But this is where things often go wrong. Extending charging cables is not without risks, and in some situations even legally prohibited.

Are you allowed to simply extend a charging cable?

No, not always. According to Dutch legislation and NEN standards, strict requirements apply to electrical connections for EV charging. For example, it is forbidden to use a household extension cord or hardware store cable between your charging point and your car.

Permitted and safe extension is only allowed if:

  • The extension cable is specially designed for EV charging.

  • The cable is equipped with the correct fuse, earth leakage protection, and thermal control.

  • The connection is watertight and CE-certified

  • The total charging current remains below the safe limit (16A or 32A, depending on type)

Common (dangerous) mistakes

1. “I just use a 10-meter outdoor extension cord.”
➡️ ❌ Not allowed and life-threatening. These are not designed for constant current and can overheat.

2. “I am extending the cable between my car and the charging station.”
➡️ ❌ A fixed charging station (public or home) communicates with the car via a data stream. If you interrupt the cable, does this no longer work properly and damage may occur.

3. “I use an adapter from CEE to Schuko.”
➡️ ⚠️ Only permitted if the charger is specifically designed to safely charge both types, with sufficient protection.


In which situations should you extend?

What requirements must a safe extension cable meet?

A legally permitted EV extension cable has:

  • Minimum 2.5 mm² copper thickness

  • CE certification and preferably TÜV certified

  • Protected connectors (IP44 or higher)

  • Residual current device or DC fault detection

  • Plugs of the correct type (Type 2, CEE 16A, Schuko, etc.)

NB: No cable must become warm during normal use. If the cable gets hot, stop immediately and replace it.


What is the maximum length an extension cable can be?

The maximum length depends on:

  • The current (16A, 32A)

  • The copper thickness of the cable

  • Voltage loss over long distances

Rule of thumb:

  • Maximum 10 meters at 16A (provided 2.5 mm²)

  • Maximum of 5 meters at 32A (provided it is 6 mm²)

It can be longer, but only if the cable is professionally designed with sufficient cooling and thickness.
